Army of Angels

First off – and forgive me – I have to get the obligatory Doctor Who reference out of the way. For several weeks while crocheting these, I kept hearing David Tennant’s Doctor in my head telling me not to blink, because obviously, as a Doctor Who geek, these quotations are burned into my mind.

However, these are both prettier and less scary than Doctor Who’s Weeping Angels, and I will not worry, next December, when I get them out and scatter them around the room in pleasing arrangements!

I’d been thinking of making these angels for some years. I’d encountered Oombawka Design’s crocheted angels way back in 2017 when I was making advent ornaments from a yarn advent calender. I made three of them then, in 4 ply yarn, and really enjoyed them. But I always fancied making them – and others – in thread, and finally the time was right to do so.

I started when I was ill with covid, which sounds like a weird time to be doing some fairly intricate crocheting, but it worked for me, and I kept going after the acute infection passed, until I’d done nineteen of the twenty angels Oombawka has designed to date. The twentieth I couldn’t do, because it required a wooden ball for the head, and I didn’t have one. But I’m very pleased with the nineteen I have 🙂

I’m not going to link individually to these angels, because woah that would be an awful lot of linking, but you can access them all at the above link, or on their Ravelry pattern page. All of my angels can be also seen on my Ravelry projects page.

I worked them all with DMC Babylo 10 crochet thread, in white, with a 1.5mm hook.

Each angel took me 2-3 hours – it would probably have been quicker with a bigger yarn or a less covid-addled brain 😀 but by and large I enjoyed making them (with one exception, Holly Angel, which I must admit nearly defeated me with the rows and rows of close ruffles), which is the important thing.

I haven’t put halos on them, because I lack the right kind of thin jewellery wire, but I’m not ruling it out for the future – I just didn’t want to buy something specially. I also haven’t put loops on them to hang them, and this is deliberate: my Christmas tree is usually small, and doesn’t really have much space for extra ornaments. But I think they’ll look lovely at Christmas, scattered across the windowsill, mantelpiece, and various shelves. They’re so pretty – my brother said they’re like spun sugar – and so delicate.

I’ve got more of the thread leftover, so I will definitely be adding to them as and when Oombawka Design creates more delightful angels.

In other crochet news, I am currently working on a Top Secret design for Stylecraft – and will, at some point, get back to my Around the World Quilt, which is currently languishing in a basket with only a hundred odd squares left to go. I think once Jan/Feb are over and the world brightens up again, I’ll feel more able to get back to the repetitive nature of those squares. I’m still determined to finish it and replace the blanket I killed, but the weather is gloomy so bright colours and variation are key to mood management 🙂

I’ve also got another project rumbling along that I hope to be able to tell you all about in a month or so. It’s not entirely crochet-related, but there’s definite overlaps. So when I can tell you, I will.

Take care all, and stay bright in all this gloomy January weather!

  1. Brought back memories, my mother made quite a few of these years ago, I still have the larger size she made for a tree topper, it was starched so she stood up nice and tall.

  2. One can see immediately why you were carried back to Sally Sparrow’s introduction to The Doctor’s manipulation of time, Cat !! I think there are many, many people to whom the mere mention of angels does the same. 🙂
Your little lace mites are gorgeous, no doubt about it ! – complimenti bella !
