I meant to post this lovely pattern months ago, but one way or another, time has passed and suddenly I realised how long it’s been since I finished it. In fairness, my lovely group of pattern testers have also been working on it, so it’s not been sat idly waiting, but the last month or so it really has been me dragging my heels about doing anything productive!
So here it is: Field of Flowers.
Isn’t it lovely?
As you can see, it’s a single repeating square, deceptively delicate, with a slightly ruffly border. Quite unlike my usual ‘multi-square’ designs, but I wanted to create a blanket that would show off the lovely colours in the Stylecraft Batik DK range.
In fact I didn’t use all the colours; some of them just didn’t fit for one reason or another. So no cream or biscuit (too pale against the silver) and no graphite (too…grey!). They’re lovely shades, but I just couldn’t use them in this blanket.
The border is designed so that you can use it for any size of blanket made using this square, and of course, being a single square motif, you can use it in many and varied ways. But I deliberately designed this blanket to use up as much of a single ball of each colour as possible. So if you make the full blanket, you should end up with only small quantities of yarn leftover.
Details
- The pattern uses sixteen colours of Stylecraft Batik DK (raspberry, rose, indigo, old gold, storm, pistachio, heather, coral, cherry, plum, mint, teal, violet, olive, sage, lupin, silver)
- For the full blanket, you will need one ball of each colour except for silver. You will need 29 balls of silver.
- I used a 4.5mm hook.
- My squares are 5.25″ across, and the blanket measures approximately 54″x102″ (137x259cm), ample for a single bed.
- Gauge is not essential for this project. If your squares are smaller, your blanket will be correspondingly smaller. If your squares are bigger, your blanket will be bigger.
- The pattern is written in US terms and includes plenty of pictures.
- You will also find a tapestry needle useful for sewing in ends.
The pattern is available for free on Ravelry.
Enjoy!
What a pretty design and I love the border. The whole blanket has a light and lacy look, perfect for mid-season. Thank you for sharing your lovely work with us.

What a beautiful pattern, Catherine. I’ve got some Drops alpaca yarn in my stash which will be perfect for a stole-version. Thank you so much for generously sharing it for free – it’s a lovely idea to invite charity donations. π
