Yes, I have finally got around to writing up a blogpost about this project 😀

Ahhh, isn’t it gorgeously rainbow-y? I looooove my cushion cover, I really do. And with a duck-feather cushion pad, it’s delightfully plump and squishable. The kind of cushion you can just grab and hug whenever you want.

This cushion cover is the result of my 2019 yarn advent calendar. I’ve treated myself to one of these three years in a row, and I think this one has been my favourite. A gorgeous rainbow of colours, starting with deep purple/blue and then working all the way around the colour spectrum until it got back to purple. And sparkly! The yarn has silver stellina in it, so the whole thing glitters and shines when it catches the light.

These were my mini skeins, which I photographed each day, to show you how the colours graduated across the days.

So much rainbow happiness! I do love a rainbow.

The advent calendar was from All Wool That Ends Wool – twenty-five mini skeins of sock weight yarn, dyed on a base of 75% superwash merino, 20% nylon, and 5% silver stellina. It was absolutely a delight opening up my little parcels every day, and I knew fairly early that I wanted to make a cushion cover using the skeins, with small motifs joined together.

So I looked around for a hexagon motif to use. I wanted a solid hexagon, not a granny or one with chains at the points, because I didn’t want to see the cushion pad underneath. I landed on Cherry Heart’s Honeybee Hexagons, but added an extra round to each hexagon, bringing them to about 2″ across (with a 3.5mm hook). I got twelve hexagons from each skein, with a little left over.

I wanted to border each motif, either before or during joining, so I found a hand-dyed yarn of the same composition (with sparkle!) in grey, and I used a single crochet join-as-you-go to join them together.

I made half-hexagons for either end, but I decided I didn’t like the look of them enough to make part-hexagons for the long edges of the cover, so I ‘filled in’ the dips with different heights of stitches to end up with a straight line (you can see the details here on my Ravelry project page).

I got the cushion pad from Cushion Warehouse, because I needed a bespoke size – the cushion cover, folded in half, is 26″ x 22.5″. They’re lovely to deal with, and even in these strange times, the cushion pad arrived very promptly, and is clearly well-made. And squiiiishy 😀 I love my squishy cushion.

It took me longer than I anticipated – two months or so, though I didn’t solidly work on it, I did allow myself to be distracted occasionally. But the result is stunning; I’m so happy with it. Totally worth the days of endless hexagons!!

It’s now in my bedroom, where it makes me smile every time I see it, though I’m sure it won’t be long until Bumble finds it and claims it… 😀
